Travel Skills: It's In the Bag … Literally

The subject of this Travel Topic Briefing is luggage with the emphasis on "lug". Lighter and less will make travelling more enjoyable. For this trip, and dare I say any trip, wheeled luggage with a retractable handle is the key. It's hard to believe that we once travelled without wheeled luggage. Porters have all but disappeared in most airports and train stations, so managing your luggage is now a necessity.

In addition to wheels, it is important to select luggage that is made of lightweight, but durable material like ballistic nylon. The weight is important for several reasons. Lightweight luggage is easy to maneuver and pick up when necessary. Additionally, airlines now charge an extra fee if luggage exceeds a specified weight. For example, when travelling to Europe, United Airlines charges $150 dollars extra for each bag weighing 51-100 lbs, and $350 per bag that weighs 71-100 lbs. And remember that is each way. Travel Tip: Be sure to check with your airline regarding baggage weight restrictions.

Another consideration is the number of bags you will carry. Much has been written about this subject and there is a website (www.onebag.com) devoted to it. My recommendation is a 22", 24", or 25" wheeled suitcase or duffel, along with a tote. If you like to "carry-on" luggage you'll want to select a 22". Again, be sure to check with your airline for their exact specifications. A 24" or 25" suitcase or duffel will require checking the bag. A lockable tote is handy for keeping valuables with you including jewelry, prescription medications and important paperwork that never should be checked. Women can also slip their purses into the tote for consolidation.

Once again the airlines are imposing restrictions on the number of bags you can check or an additional charge is levied each way. Travel Tip: Be sure to check with your airline regarding excess baggage restrictions.

If it's time to purchase new luggage, here are several sites for online window shopping. Don't forget to check the weight of each bag when perusing. My personal luggage favorites are made by Eagle Creek. Their Centerline Hovercraft 22" suitcase weighs only 7.6 lbs, and the 25" is 8.14 lbs.

If you're happy with your current luggage, don't forget to give it the once over for wear and tear. Check the hinges, zippers, zipper pulls, handles, straps and wheels to ensure they are in working order. If not, it's time for a visit to a luggage or shoe repair shop.
